Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between EFL learners’ motivationand autonomy. In order to gather relevant data motivation and autonomy questionnaire weredistributed among 100 intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced EFL learners. To fulfillthe objectives of this study, both descriptive and inferential statistics were utilized in the processof data analysis. According to the statistical analysis, learners’ motivation significantlycorrelated with their autonomy. Also it was found that there is a significant positive correlationbetween autonomy and intrinsic motivation while the correlation between autonomy andextrinsic motivation is significant but negative. In the following steps a regression analysis and aMultiple Regression analysis were run and the results proved that learners’ overall motivationcan significantly predict their autonomy and in this case, intrinsic motivation is the onlysignificant predictor of EFL learners’ autonomy. The findings of the study have implications forEFL practitioners.
