Abstract:

Components made up of smart material like shape memory alloys (SMAs) or piezoelectric ceramics are increasingly being used by vibration control practitioners. In this work, the alteration of natural frequency of plates of a satellite structure using two types of vibration control system which are composed of NiTiNOL1-based shape memory alloy wires will be presented. The governing equations will be solved analytically and numerically to show the effect of recovery stresses acting in wires and the subsequent effect they have on stiffness of the plate and hence its natural frequency. The results showed that the natural frequencies of the plate change slightly at a temperature above the austenite finish temperature of the embedded prestrained SMA wires in the plate. Various parameters in the design of these smart mechanisms such as size andarrangement of wires are studied in order to optimize the system.
