On A 2D Numerical Simulation of Laser Cladding by Powder Deposition

In this paper, a 2D transient numerical model for the convection-diffusion and phase change during the laser cladding process with powder deposition is presented. The governing equations are namely: continuity, momentum, energy and an equation to track the evolution of the free surface using a Volume-of-Fluid algorithm. The equations are discritized using finite volume numerical techniques. The surface tension is incorporated into the model as a body force using the CSF method. The effect of convection heat transfer at the top of the clad is considered; however, the influence of radiation is neglected due to the small effect on the temperature field. The proposed model is capable of predicting the final clad shape, height and depth.
