Abstract:

High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is one of the promising non-invasive focal therapies. The utilization of this technology in different therapeutic applications has increased dramati-cally. Among them is HIFU for focal cancer therapy. The main objective of the present study is to develop a simulation model capable of modeling the propagation of the HIFU acoustic waves in the human eye for an ex-vivo experiment. Different parts of the eye and their me-chanical properties were considered in the model with the aim of capturing waves’ propagation accurately. Results showed that increasing the frequency of the transducer, makes the focal region finer. It was found that with moderate frequencies (i.e. higher than 10 MHz) fine enough resolution could be achieved which would be enough to ablate cancerous tissues located be-tween retina and sclera. A displacement between the measured focal point and the geometrical point was also observed in all frequencies.
