Abstract:

Factors influencing successful academic reading are found to be the knowledge of academic vocabulary [1] and general vocabulary knowledge [2]. This study was thus conducted to explore the contribution of general and academic vocabulary knowledge to academic reading comprehension. The participants were 120 undergraduate students of Engineering at the Iran University of Science and Technology. General and academic vocabulary tests were the instruments of this study. The results showed that the highest correlation was found between academic and general vocabulary test scores, while the lowest amount was found between academic reading and academic vocabulary. The results also revealed that general vocabulary knowledge was the most significant contributor to academic reading comprehension
