Born in Feb, nineteen nineteen-eighty-eight, Sahand Aghaei is an Iranian author and poet based in Tehran. He started his literary and intellectual career since early 2000’s and with his poems being published in Karnameh Literary Journal under the editorship of late Manouchehr Atashi and in Payab Mag. Consisting of his poems between the years 1999 and 2004, his first poetry volume was published by Sales Publication House in 2006 with the title of The Sheperd of Wounded Lands. However, it was with the publication of his second poetry volume called An "Abdol’Ghadir Having Come from the forest" in 2009, that made him known in literary and intellectual circles both within and without the country. The long poem, Headedness and the Orients, the most significant work of this volume, was deemed entirely unpublishable by the regime’s Ministry of Culture and Guidance, yet of this dejected poem, what has survived in the collection is its title drawing on a line from this work. Sahand Aghaei failed to publish any of his sociopolitical poems including Aboudarya, Revolution, Vein, and Elegy Note, in his owwn country until mid-2010's so much that eventually they were published abroad in 2018, in a volume called Roud by Manjenigh Publication. Houshyar Ansari’far, Foad Naziri, Pegah Ahmadi, Shiva Arastouyi, Mitra Iliyati, Hussein Imaniyan, Hussein Sharang, Shahin Shirzadi, Shariyar Khosrawi, Said Muhammad Hassani, Ali sabati and etc. Have been thus far among those authors and critics of note to have written on this volume. However, what these critiques attest to, regardless of their varying qualities, is the success of poetic career materialized through this collection. Between the years 2007 to 2023, Aghaei has also enjoyed the career of a professional literary translator by translating works of authors such as Lao Tzu (in his Tao Te Ching), Alain Bosquet, Jean Follain, Raymond Queneau, Denys Garneau, Nazar Ghabani, Ahmed Matar, Joy Harjo, Ivan Bunin, Margarette Atwood, Abdol’vahab al’Bayati, Steven Spender, Ku Sang, James Joys, Pablo Neruda and Adonis, sometimes as collaboration with other translators. It must be added that some works of his latest poetry Volume, the Fragments, have been translated to English by Ali Sabati. He has so far published fifteen volumes in addition to essays and articles, along with a number of dialogues, published in magazines both domestic and international. He passed all stages of his academic career in Farsi language and lit., at Tehran Uni., and ultimately managed to defend his PhD thesis, with an area of expertise in Epic Lit., in the year 2022 and with the subject of The Traces of Shamanism in Iranian Myths with Reliance on Shahnameh, the Book of Kings. He also has enjoyed the consistent support of his supervising professor, Zhaleh Amouzgar, in extracting an essay from this dissertation titled as Descendance into the Under-World in Iranian Myths. It is worth adding that this dissertation has got published in form of an independent book, Iranian Shamanism, with only a brief foreword for its third edition, added to the original introduction into the work, with the mere difference of note being the change in its title from former study to latter volume in order that, both, it brings the informed readers into reminder about the fact that for the “Iranian” aspect of shamanism to survive at all, one needs to educate oneself in a number of (in)visible fields and even a couple of transparent areas of conflict and brings into discourse the Iranian branch of shamanism in parallel with the centrality of such other shamanism’s as Indian, Asian, Semite, and Babylonian.
