Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the strategies used by native and non-native translators in the translation of Bahuvrihi adjective compounds in Hafiz poems. In order to conduct this study, Hafiz poems with its translation by William Wilforce Clark as a non-native translator and Shahriyar Shahriyari as a native translator were analyzed. At first, Bahuvrihi adjective compounds were identified then they were compared with their English translations to find out which strategies were used by native and non-native translators. A total of 127 Hafiz poems were analyzed and 84 Bahuvrihi adjective compounds were extracted but only a selective number of them are presented within the paper. The Bahuvrihi adjective compounds were identified based on Bakhtiyari classification and were analyzed based on Christensen’s strategies. Finally, the result of this study revealed that there was a significant difference between the two translators’ work in terms of rendering Bahuvrihi adjective compounds.
