Abstract:

Electrospun fiber mats have high potentials for biomedical uses, due to their high surface area and ease of drug incorporation into them. They can be used as carriers for drug delivery and can enhance drug release and skin permeability. In this work, Electrospun nanofibrous mats made from poly (lactic acid) (PLA), poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and a 50/50 PLA/PCL blend containing tetracycline hydrochloride as a wound dressing material were prepared and their properties investigated. Samples of PLA and PCL solutions in chloroform/dimethylformamide (9/1) with 6, 9, 12 and 15% (w/v) containing 250 μg/ml drug were prepared. Morphological properties, water-vapor permeability, and drug release rate as well as antibacterial activity on these nanofibrous samples were investigatigated. The results showed that the optimum concentration of PLA, PCL and their blend were 12, 15 and 15% (w/v), respectively. Also UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated 15% (w/v) polyblend samples with 250 μg/ml concentration tetracycline hydrochloride had a higher release rate efficiency compared to the other nanofibrous samples.
