Abstract:

2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, Isopropyl Amine salt (2,4-D IPA salt) is a herbicide with potential toxicity for humans and animals that is used word-wide on a large scale for the selectivecontrol of weeds in gardens and farming. It is poorly biodegradable and has been detected as majorpollutant in ground and surface waters. For this reason, there is great interest in the study of oxidation methods with ability enough to degrade of herbicide in aqueous medium to try to avoidits dangerous accumulation in the aquatic environment. Ozone is a strong oxidant that can be usedin the potabilization of surface or ground water as well as in wastewater treatment to remove microorganisms, inorganic ions and organic pollutants. In this work, the ability of ozone on thedegradation of 2, 4-D IPA salt was studied. Experimental results of 30min ozonation, showed that removal efficiencies (including degradation of 2,4-D IPA salt in aqueous phase and its evaporation into gas phase) were 62.0%, 66.8% and 75.0% for gas flow rate of 5, 10 and 15cm³/s, respectively.Whereas the removal efficiencies, considering degradation of 2,4-D IPA salt, were 54.2%, 48.1% and 51.2% for gas flow rate of 5, 10 and 15cm³/s, respectively. Appearance kinetic constant related to first order kinetic model was determined 0.02 min-1 at room temperature.
