Abstract:

The present study aims at exploring the (possible) relationship between vocabulary learning strategies and lexicon size. A total of 40 participants from lower-intermediate to upper- intermediate proficiency levels from one language institute in Isfahan participated in this study. This study was a correlational survey of descriptive nature. The following measuring instruments were used to collect the data: an Oxford Placement Test (OPT) to determine the participants’ proficiency level, a vocabulary size standardized test developed by Nation (2007), and a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire based on Schmitt (1997, 2000) taxonomy, including determination, memory, cognitive, social, and metacognitive strategies . The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics (i.e., mean and standard deviation) and statistical multiple regression. The findings led to some suggestions to enhance L2 learners’ vocabulary learning, increase their vocabulary size and, consequently, improve their English language proficiency
