Abstract:

The number of years of education that a student has gone through is no indication of his ability to write. Many students write in comprehensibly. These ((novice)) writers adopt different writing strategies as opposed to expert writers. A coherent paragraph has sentences that all flow together, they are not isolated from each other. Furthermore, students think that their lack of composing competence is due to their limited language resources. Hence, they are very concerned with language matters. The relationship which links utterances and sentences in discourse is called coherence. In writing texts coherence means whether the text makes sense for the reader or not and contains relationship and clarity in concepts and ideas. Generally a paragraph has coherence when a group of sentences develop a main idea unanimously. The more capacity in producing coherence, the better language learners can improve their speaking and writing skills. We should bear in mind that producing coherence has its own conditions and difficulties in different stages (beginner-intermediate-advanced). Naturally we should pass the hierarchical stages in order to reach to the ultimate goal of acquiring a second language which is become fluent. Research provides a profile of methods to help students approach the writing task and overcome the problems of establishing coherence in their writing.
