Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate chemical composition and antioxidant effect of satureja hortensis essential oil.essential oil of aerial parts of satureja hortensis was prepared using a Clevenger type apparatus for 3 h. Analysis of essential oil constituents by gas chromatography- mass spectrophotometry was performed. Total phenol and free radical scavenging activity of EO were evaluated. 9 constituents which represented 94 % of satureja hortensis essential oil was identified by high amounts of beta elemene (50.87 %).Total phenolic content was determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (32.65 mg/g), which was presented as gallic acid equivalent in 1 g of sample. IC50 of EO and ascorbic acid in DPPH method were respectively 277.9 and 19.34 μg. The antioxidant activity results showed that satureja is a good source of natural oxidants.
