Abstract:
In friction stir welding (FSW) process, heat generated due to friction between the tool and the workpiece and flows into the workpiece as well as the tool. The amount of heat conducted into the workpiece determines the quality of the weld microstructure transitions, residual stresses and distortion of the workpiece. In this study, a heat transfer model in both conventional and simultaneous cooling process of FSW of AL-5086 is proposed and simulated numerically. Comparison of model numerical simulation and experimental data indicates a good agreement. Consequently, from numerical simulations, optimizing the design of proper simultaneous cooling is performed for a suitable approach to reduce the welding distortions and residual stresses.
