Abstract:
Asphalt concrete is used for a variety of purposes, from surfacing roads to covering building roofs. Abundance of raw materials, ease of production, its ability to take forms and therefore ease of use and repair, has made asphalt concrete an ideal construction material. On the other hand, purchasing its raw materials, as well as disposing old asphalt pavements, are very costly. Moreover, by releasing substances that are harmful to the environment, wildlife, and humans, disposed asphalt concrete is considered an environmental hazard. This proposal is aimed at familiarizing the audience with applications of recycled asphalt concrete for civil engineering projects. By doing so, the audience learns how to minimize the environmental impacts, as well as lower the cost, of the use of asphalt concrete in such projects. Moreover, the audience will be introduced to permeable asphalt concrete, which can be used to store rainfall runoff, thus avoiding flooding on streets.
