Abstract:
There are some alternatives for rehabilitation of highly cracked asphalt pavements namely, Crack filling and overlay, milling and overlay, cold or hot recycling, using Crack Relief Layer(CRL) below the overlay and etc. If cracks are frequent and highly deteriorated, they can be treated using the CRL as a time and cost effective method. This layer is installed below theoverlay to prevent from occurrence of reflective cracking. This paper represents laboratory andfield investigations of mix design, workability and construction specifications for using open graded asphalt mixes as CRL. The results indicated that there was little bonding between theaggregates due to the lack of sufficient fine materials and filler. The compaction of this layer wasimperative and the gyratory compactor diagrams showed the differences between the workability of open graded crack relief mixture and the common dense graded asphalt mixture
