Abstract:
Introduction: Regarding the modulatory effects of tamoxifen on the actions ofestrogen which have previously reported, the aim of the present study was toinvestigate the effects of tamoxifen on learning, memory and brain tissuesoxidative damage in ovariectomized (OVX) naïve female rats. Methods: Ovariectomized(OVX) and sham operated rats were divided into 4groups: (1) Sham, (2) OVX, (3) Sham-Tamoxifen(Sham-TAM) and (4)Ovariectomized-Tamoxifen(OVX-TAM). The animals of the Sham-TAM andOVX-TAM groups were treated by daily injection of tamoxifen (TAM,1mg/kg). After 4 weeks, the brains of animals of all groups were removed andtotal thiol groups and molondialdehyde(MDA) concentrations were measured. Results: In OVX-TAM group, the total thiol concentration was significantlyhigher(p<0.05) and MDA concentration was lower(p<0.01) than OVX group.however, there was no significant difference between Sham-TAM and Shamgroup. Conclusion: These results allow us to propose that treatment with tamoxifenpossiblity mechanism may be due to its protective effects against brain tissuesoxidative damage.
