Abstract:

One of the main goals for learning English among Iranian learners is to improve their speaking ability. Meanwhile, with the advent of new technology, Mobile Learning (mLearning) has found its way into language learning environment and many teachers and educators, in an attempt to employ a variety of instructional aids and innovation in their classes, have incorporated it in their teaching process. Along this way, the current study aimed at exploring the effects of using collaborative dialogue through Telegram on developing EFL learners’ speaking performance. To this purpose, 44 learners out of 70 participants were selected based on their scores on the KET and were randomly assigned into two groups: the Experimental and the Control Groups, each with 22 participants. The experimental group used Telegram to get the special instruction on speaking and the control group received the traditional instruction. The instructor was the same person for both groups and the instruction lasted ten sessions. The results of statistical analyses revealed that the experimental group outperformed the control group significantly in their speaking performance. Therefore, it was concluded that using collaborative dialogue through telegram has a positive influence on the learners speaking performance. The findings of the current study have pedagogical implications for teachers, learners, and educators in the field.
