Abstract:
The behavior of any traffic flow is sensitive to speed pattern of involved vehicles. The heavier the traffic, the more sensitive the behavior to speed changes. Focusing on air traffic flow, weather condition has a major role in deviations of aircraft operational speed from desired speed and causing surplus delays. In this paper, the wind-induced delays in terminal area are analyzed using Cellular Automaton model. Cellular automata are powerful discrete models that are capable of simulating complex emerging properties of dynamic systems. A one-dimensional cellular array is used to model the flow of the terminal traffic into a moving wind field. The modeled route is an RNAV STAR route to Atlanta International Airport and the model is verified by real traffic data. Simulation results show that a constant speed stationary wind field induces a constant delay in normal traffic and a constant moving delay in heavy traffic.
