Abstract:
This article focuses on Inside (2016), a puzzle-platformer adventure game developed and published by Playdead, in an attempt to answer how the notion of choice can be discussed in regard to the concepts of the self and identity in the post-global era. To this end, the notion of the self and its relation with concepts such as individualism are examined through the perspective of William Glasser’s Theory of Choice. It is argued that while the main character as well as other zombie-like clones might genetically be manipulated from the beginning, the boy, however, tries hard to fulfill his basic natural needs, whether the dominant atmosphere in the world of the game permits that or not. Such attempt on the part of the boy can signify the last flickers of hope for the survival of the self in the world in which one is the constant targets of media and propaganda.
