Comparing Two Dams on Active Flaw Lorestan Dam abstract
In this paper we introduce Lorestan lorstan project is in second phase of studies and near in future will be constructed. In Lorestan project, A potentially active seismic fault(F1) has beenidentified running upstream/ downstream through the dam foundation .In order to prevent excessive damage to the dam should this fault be activated during the life of the project, amovement joint has been included in dam design above this fault. The orientation of the dam hasbeen chosen so that, as far as possible, this movement joint is at a right angle to the dam axis. The geological interpretation of this fault is that it is a right-lateral strike-slip fault, and thatprevious movement appears to have been largely upstream - downstream with little verticalcomponent, with the left abutment moving downstream relative to the rest of the dam. Previous displacement of the fault can be determined from displacement of marker beds as about 5m in total. It is not considered to be a causative fault, and movement would occur due to redistribution of stress during a major earthquake on the Main Recent Fault, located about 1 Km to the west of the dam. The last movement of the fault is thought to have taken place some 7000 years ago, but displacement of local section of the Main recent fault has occurred more recently than this. The maximum displacement expected of the fault has been assesses as 0.5m. The conceptual design of the movement joint is to limit the shear stress that it can carry to theminimum required for the dam to act normally , carrying sufficient shear across the joint to prevent significant movement of the dam joint under normal load conditions up to the DBE.Then after introducing Lorestan Dam & H.P.P about putting a slip joints in the dam body andpresented all characteristic related to this slip joint such as geology , Seismology ,Structure and other aspects. At final we compare Lorestan lorestan dam with Clyde dam in New Zealand that built on an active fault.
