Demand for new generation of insulating oils

Mineral insulating oil is produced by refining crude oil. Although all mineral oil consists of groups of hydrocarbons such as paraffinic, naphthenic and aromatic carbon structures but their behaviour in service may differ. Specifications are produced and used for purchasing of insulating oil. With recent international finding and demand from industry there is requirement to move to higher refined oil. In the other hand highly refined oil has lower oxidation stability due to removal of natural antioxidants from the oil by severe refining. By adding inhibitor to such high refined oil resistance to oxidation will improve and as the oil is high refined response to inhibitor is very good. Application thinking should be use for selection of insulating oil as each equipment may require different type of oil. Selection of correct oil for each application has impact on the lifetime economy of a transformer.
