FUSION ENERGY DEVELOPMENT THE INVOLVEMENT OF CANADA'S NUCLEAR INDUSTRY abstract

Included among the benefits often cited for fusion as an energy system are the abundance of fuel-isotopes of hydrogen and lithium. The impossibility of a runaway reaction, and the absence of long lived active wastes requiring long term disposal. Still in research of feasibility demonstration phase projects at Princton , and Culham plan to conduct tritiumdeute rium fuelling and expect. to achieve scientific energy breakeven with an output of up to 30 MW of fusion power early in 1990's design and operating.experience from these experiments and compar able projects in Japan and the USSR are providing the information required to enable the design and construction of the next phase ignition machine which will permit engineering tests and the demonstration of continuous burn, fuelling and maintenance technologies. In this paper , the progress made by Canada's nuclear industry in this field has been shown and it has been claimed that such a progress could be possible only because of the similarity of many of the CANDU technology with those required by fusion.
