Abstract This paper discusses utilization of the decision making methodology for optimal placement of Volt Ampere Reactive (VAR) compensators in electric power systems, which will help electric power systems planners to select one overall reactive power installation pattern that will satisfy system performance as well as engineering and economic constraints. The purposed methodology for optimal VAR compensators placement is capable of satisfying the following criteria: • System performance -Sensitivity of steady state stability -Voltage level of buses -Real power losses -Voltage collapse -Security constraints • Technical feasibility -Vicinity to major load areas -Engineering feasibility • Economic constraints
