ENVIRONMENTALLY -ACCEPTABLE POWERGeneration

Many of world's environmental problems result directly from extraction and use of energy resources. ' Today, energy is used on such a large scale that the resulting environmental problems can spread from country to country, and can even affect the earth's natural cycles. At present, most of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels,: coal, oil and gas. Twenty years ago, nuclear energy was widely believed to be the energy source of the future. Today, however, there is a large question mark over the world nuclear energy industry. Attention has now turned to usage of energy resources more efficiently, using replaceable energy resources as much as possible and also developing new and modem energy conversion systems for better utilisation of available fuels. First part of this paper involves the studies carried out to determine the magnitude of the environmental problems associated with power generation and to identify how careful or wasteful(less careful) are different countries with energy. In second part the author suggests methods for better utilisation of fuel for environmentally safer power generation.
