NEW TYPE OF CONDUCTORS FOR INCREASING CURRENT CAPACITY OF EXISTING OVERHEAD LINES abstract
In the suburbs of major cities, securing Rights of Way for transmission lines is extremely difficult these days: At the same time, however, the power demand in such cities continues to increase. In Japan, this has been a particular dilemma, as systematic urban development has been romoted for the past 15 years. We have attained the new means to increase the current carrying capacity of a transmission line by simply rearranging conductors (without modification of voltage or towers). This paper introduces the efforts undertaken in Japan to reach this solution, reporting details of the widely utilized GTACSR and an outline of the Invar-cored, heatresistant ACSR, a furthermore effective cable than the GTACSR which has been recently marketed.
