EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKES ON ELECTRIC POWER SYSTEM abstract
The earthquake damage experienced by electric power system is briefly reviewed . Low cost methods for improving the seismic resistance of five categorise of epuipment damage are disucced .Securing substation transformers prevents potential catastrophic losses due to transformers falling from elevated pedestals, and the failure of lightning arrestors bushings and control cables due to lack of slack in interconnections. Securing substation and power station batteries to their racks and the racks to their foundation improves their resistance significantly. Securing computer equipments can prevent damage and disruption due to their loss. Proper detailing of the control rooms can prevent damage and disruption caused by restriction in their operation. While securing circuit breakers may reduce damage. improved design and use of base isolation systems may be required -to provide resistance against large earthquakes. Site location is an important element in the earthquake response of a facility. Key substations should not be placed at a location with poor site conditions.
