CALCULATION OF EDDY CURRENT LOSSES IN POWER CABLES AND OVERHEAD TRANSMISSION LINES BY FINITE ELEMENT METHOD abstract
In this paper, the method of Finite Elements (FE) is used to calculate the eddy current losses of power cables and overhead transmission lines.
The current distribution in the cross secytion of cables and overhead lines with different configurations has been obtained and the effective current of each phase has been calculated. The method is also used to predict the parameters of the line using the electromagnetic energy stored in
the field. The ground effect for overhead lines and various insulation type for cables can be taken into account by,' this method.
The FE results are in good agreement with analytical results . The method could be applied for complicated geometries and nonlinear insulation materials. The calculation of current changes has been performed ill frequency domain. The advantage of the method is its capability in predicting the losses and parameters of the system accurately without simplifying assumption used in asymptotic methods.
