Since it was introduced in 1980th, on-line PD test has become popular method of High Voltage insulation monitoring. Using this method it become possible to test generator in "natural" environment, when all mechanical, magnetic and electrical stresses are present in the tested winding. By testing on-line it is possible to much better determine the differences between good and bad electrical insulation, since off-line test often can not determine that difference. Testing before and after a repair will give the best information on the effectiveness of the repair on the generator winding. Besides, PDA test can be used as the best tool for testing generator stator bars in the factory before placing them in the generator. . Every bar from a production series is tested without destruction and PD signature is used to precisely determine its quality and the best location in the winding.
