Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to outline an initial evaluation of the effectiveness of the first volume of English for School series published in Iran in early 2013. Few studies have been conducted to evaluate Prospect 1 , which is designed to meet the needs of Iranian junior high school students.This initial evaluation is based on a new checklist with local criteria that is generated form Grave’s (2000) frame work for conceptualizing the content as principled criteria and a checklist by Mukundan (2012) as universal criteria. According to the results, even though Prospect 1 seems to be partially successful in achieving some of the general goals of the designers, yet a number of gaps were identified in the evaluated items namely, layout and design, language skills, activities and linguistic skills and L1 and L2 culture. Some implications are provided for textbook developers and ELT practitioners to be taken into account for textbook enhancement.
