Three-Dimensional Hydrodynamic Modelling of Future Reservoir to Adapt Facing Global Warming Effects (Abolabbas Dam abstract

Adapting the future reservoirs to the probable changes in a changing and warming world is one of the crucial issues of the environmental and water sciences. A three dimensional model for lakes and reservoirs hydrodynamics (ELCOM) has been used to simulate the response of Abolabbas proposed reservoir (southwest of Iran) with probable scenarios of warming water and climate, and changing inflow salinity. The scenarios were defined using the water quality, hydrologic, climatologic data and the dam structural information for simulation with both open and closed outlets conditions. The results showed that increment of inflow salinity, affects on full reservoir outflow with a nonlinear pattern, while it has an immediate and linear effect when it is in minimum operating level. Also the simulation showed the high sensitivity of the reservoir to any change of inflow water temperature especially in decreasing the thermocline level below the outlets. Consequently, permanent monitoring of withdrawal water temperature and mixing it by bottom outlet water in urgent conditions, was suggested during the dam operation period especially when it is in minimum operating level, due to undesirable environmental effects might the warmer water have on downstream ecosystem
