Biomass as a source for producing hydrogen utilized by Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs)

Nowadays, the environmental, economic and social concerns necessitate us to use renewable energy sources, instead of fossil fuels for our requirements in the life. The use of biomass to produce energy is only one form of renewable energy that can be utilize to reduce the impact of energy production and use on the global environment. Due to different process, biomass can produce methanol, biogas, ethanol, etc. Hydrogen is one of the products, which is obtainable through special process (such as reforming) by the energy source of biomass. In this case hydrogen can be used by a fuel cell system to produce electricity. Biomass products such as: ethanol, methanol and biogas can be used by a fuel processor for reforming through special reforming methods such as: partial oxidation, autothermal reforming, steam reforming, or other reforming methods. According such process we can use the biomass, a renewable energy source for producing electricity by a fuel cell system. In this paper we explain the products of biomass converting systems, and also we discuss about the hydrogen production for fuel cell systems by the biomass source, fuel processing system and special conditions in such process.
