Expert Systems in EMS

This paper presents an overview of the expert system and its application to Energy Management Systems (EMS) Application of an expert system to the EMS is not an alternative means, to an analytical solution. It has been found that the analytical approach is fox to rigid to assist an operator during abnormal operation of a system. Over years the idea of a type of software that reasons similar to an expert system operator, and implements his/her experience as guide lines (rules) to reach a solution, has been developed. This type of software may be used as a powerful tool to assist an operator when the system is not in a normal condition, or the time is too tight for a human to make a decision, or the operator is of a lesser skill to deal with emergency conditions. For certain off-line applications the expert-system simplifies the method and inclu 1 dos situations that can not be considered otherwise.
