Bioethanol production from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) by hot water pretreatment abstract

The organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) is a potential raw material for bioenergy production. The OFMSW was converted to bioethanol by separate enzymatic hydrolysis andfermentation using Mucor indicus. The OFMSW was treated with hot water at temperature of 100,130, and 160 ºC for 0, 30, and 60 min, with 10 % (w/w) solid loading. For these conditions, the total solid recovery percentage was 22 % to 41 %. After pretreatment, the solid fraction (mostlycontained lignocellulosic materials) and liquid fraction (mostly contained starch based materials)were hydrolyzed by a state of art commercial cellulase and α-amylase enzymes, respectively. The hydrolysates were subjected to ethanolic fermentation and the highest volumetric ethanol (33.8 g/L) was obtained after treatment of OFMSW at 130 ºC for 60 minutes.
