Ethanol production from rice straw by simultaneous saccharification and dry fermentation abstract

N-methyl morpholine N-Oxide pretreated rice straw was subjected to dry hydrolysis and dry simultaneous saccharification and fermentation. Enzymatic hydrolysis wereconducted at 15% solids using cellulase loadings ranging from 5 to 40 FPU/g substrate. The highest total sugar concentration was 126 g/l, obtained after 72 h hydrolysis at 37 °C.Enzymatic hydrolysis yields improved from 50% for the untreated straw toapproximately 100% for the treated straw at 40 FPU/g substrate. Saccharomyces cerevisiae was used for simultaneous saccharification and dry fermentation. High ethanol concentration of 29.3 g/l and production yield of 66.7% were obtained after pretreatment.
