Assessment of wind energy potential and wind characteristics in Ilam region, Iran abstract
Iran is a wide country with high wind energy potential and diversity of climate that for using wind energy needs to study on different city and province of. Depleting oil and gas reserves,have made it inevitable to find energy from renewable energy sources such as wind. This study presents an investigation of the wind power potential of Ilam, located in the west of Iran. The seasonal, monthly and diurnal mean speed calculated, that showed, summer, June and 12amhave maximum mean wind speed and power density. The wind power density was obtained,and indicated that the region is not completely suitable for large on-grid wind farm and related investments. But, the region can be suitable for off-grid applications such as water pumping andirrigation, lighting, electric fan, battery charging and as hybrid with other power sources. The wind rose diagram showed that the prevailing wind direction is in ESE.
